How Noise Cancellation Actually Works (And Its Limits)

Why ANC silences a train but not an open-plan office, what the decibel claims on the box really mean, and the free fix that improves any pair.

Active noise cancellation is one of the few consumer technologies where the marketing and the physics genuinely diverge. Understanding roughly how it works tells you what to expect from it — and why a pair that transforms your commute does very little in your office.

The basic mechanism

Sound is a pressure wave. If you generate a second wave that is the exact inverse of the first — peaks where the original has troughs — the two cancel and you hear less.

That is what ANC does. A microphone on the outside of the earcup listens to incoming sound, a processor computes the inverse, and the driver plays it alongside your music. A second microphone inside the cup checks the result and corrects it.

The whole loop has to happen in well under a millisecond, which is why this is a hard engineering problem and why cheap implementations underperform.

Why it works brilliantly on some sounds and barely on others

The processor has to predict the next fraction of the incoming waveform in order to cancel it.

Low-frequency, steady sound is highly predictable. Engine rumble, an aircraft cabin, a train, an air conditioner, a ceiling fan — these repeat at a consistent frequency. The system locks onto the pattern and cancels it almost completely. This is why good ANC on a Metro coach feels like magic.

High-frequency, irregular sound is essentially unpredictable. Speech, a barking dog, keyboard clatter, a baby crying. By the time the system has characterised the sound, it has changed. Cancellation here is marginal at best.

So the honest expectation: ANC removes rumble and takes the edge off everything else. A pair that makes a bus go quiet will make an open-plan office merely softer. That is not a defect in your earbuds.

The seal does more work than the electronics

This is the part almost nobody is told at the point of sale.

Before any active cancellation happens, the physical barrier between your ear canal and the outside world is blocking sound — this is passive isolation. For high-frequency noise, passive isolation does nearly all of the work, because active cancellation is poor there anyway.

If the eartip does not seal, you lose passive isolation and the active system’s calibration is thrown off. The result is a premium pair performing worse than a cheap one that happens to fit.

Try every tip size in the box. Try the large on one ear and the medium on the other if your ears differ, which is common. Most earbuds have a fit test in their companion app — use it. This costs nothing and routinely produces a bigger improvement than spending another ₹3,000.

For over-ear headphones, the equivalent variables are clamping force and whether your glasses break the seal against your head. Glasses wearers lose a meaningful amount of isolation, and there is no setting that fixes it.

What the decibel claims mean

“Up to 45dB of noise cancellation” is not a comparable figure between brands.

It is measured by the manufacturer, at a frequency they choose — invariably one where their system performs best, typically somewhere around 100–200Hz — under conditions they do not publish. There is no mandated test standard for consumer ANC.

Two pairs claiming 45dB can differ substantially in real use. Treat the number as a marketing claim, not a measurement, and judge by listening or by reviews that test across the frequency range.

Transparency mode is the underrated feature

Transparency, or ambient mode, uses the same external microphones to pipe the outside world in, so you can hear an announcement or hold a conversation without removing anything.

The quality gap between implementations here is much wider than the gap in cancellation quality. Cheap transparency sounds hissy and artificial, like a bad phone speaker held to your ear. Good transparency is close to natural.

If you take your earbuds out several times a day to talk to people, transparency quality will affect you more than ANC quality. Very few reviews weight it accordingly.

Two things worth knowing

ANC is better for your hearing, not worse. The common worry has it backwards. Without cancellation you raise the volume to overcome background noise, and that is what damages hearing. ANC lets you listen quieter. The pressure sensation some people feel is not pressure — it is your brain interpreting the absence of expected ambient sound — and it usually fades with use.

Battery figures are often quoted ANC-off. Check which number is on the box. The difference is typically 20–30%.

If you remember one thing

Fit before spend. A ₹5,000 pair that seals properly will outperform a ₹15,000 pair that does not, and the ten minutes you spend trying eartips is the best return available anywhere in audio.
