iPhone Duo: Should You Pre-Order Apple's First Foldable?

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026 — its first foldable, after years of watching Samsung, Google and Honor iterate through the awkward generations. It starts at ₹2,99,900 and rises to ₹4,49,900 for 2TB.

This is not a review. Nobody has reviewed it, because it does not go on sale until 23 October. What follows is what Apple has confirmed, what that implies, and how we would think about the decision.

What Apple has actually confirmed

The shape of it: a 5.4-inch outer display for ordinary phone tasks, opening into a 7.6-inch inner display. Both are Super Retina XDR with ProMotion, Always On, and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness — so unlike several earlier foldables, the outer screen is not a compromised panel you tolerate.

Three details stand out as more than spec-sheet filler.

The battery architecture. Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer, and 24 hours when both are used equally. A dual-battery system split across the two halves is how they got there. Those outer-display figures are better than most non-folding flagships manage, which addresses the historic complaint that foldables are a battery compromise.

Grade 5 titanium and Ceramic Shield. Apple went to titanium for the frame, which matters more on a hinged device than a slab.

The nano-texture inner display. An anti-glare treatment on the folding panel. Plastic-feeling, glare-prone inner screens have been a persistent foldable weakness; this is a direct attempt at it.

The Touch ID question

Face ID is gone. Authentication is Touch ID built into the side button, with Apple Watch unlock as a secondary route.

For a foldable this is a reasonable engineering call — the TrueDepth array is hard to fit twice, and Apple wanted the thinnest iPhone ever when unfolded. One side-button sensor serves both open and closed states.

It is still a downgrade for a lot of real workflows. Face ID authenticates while your hands are wet, while you are holding something, while the phone is flat on a desk. Touch ID needs a deliberate finger placement. If you authenticate dozens of times a day for payments and banking, you will notice this daily, and it is the single most likely thing to annoy a buyer moving from an iPhone 17 Pro.

What we do not know

Worth being explicit, because the gap between announcement and availability is where overconfident coverage lives.

• Hinge durability over years. No shipping record. Competitors needed multiple generations.
• How visible the crease is in ordinary use. Every book-style foldable has one.
• Real-world battery against Apple’s lab figures.
• Camera performance. A dual 48MP system is fewer lenses than the iPhone 18 Pro’s triple arrangement, and how Apple’s processing handles the thinner optics is untested.
• Repair cost. Foldable screen replacements have historically been eye-watering. Apple has not published India service pricing.

Who this is for

Pre-order it if you have genuinely wanted a tablet-sized screen in your pocket, you are on iOS and will not switch, and ₹3 lakh is money you can spend without it being a decision. Early adopters fund generation two; that is a legitimate thing to be.

Wait if any of the following apply. You authenticate constantly and rely on Face ID. You want a proven hinge. You are cross-shopping against Samsung’s or Google’s fourth-generation folding hardware, which has a durability record Apple cannot yet match. Or the price genuinely stings — in which case this is not the year.

The honest alternative

At ₹1,79,900 the iPhone 18 Pro Max costs ₹1,20,000 less, has a third rear camera, keeps Face ID, has no hinge to fail, and delivers up to 45 hours of video playback — more than the Duo manages on either screen.

What you give up is the 7.6-inch canvas. That is the entire trade. If the large inner display is not something you have specifically wanted, the Pro Max is the better phone and it is not close.

What we will do

We will not publish a verdict on the iPhone Duo until it has been used for a meaningful period — which means after 23 October at the earliest. Foldables are precisely the category where first-week impressions mislead, because the questions that matter are about the hinge, the crease and the battery at month six.

If you are deciding before then, decide on the confirmed specifications above and on your own tolerance for first-generation hardware. Anyone telling you more than this today is guessing.
