BEE Star Ratings: How Much Do They Really Save You?

How to read a BEE label, why a 5 star from 2022 is not a 5 star today, and the arithmetic that tells you whether the premium pays for itself.

The BEE star label is the most useful piece of information on an appliance box and the most commonly misread. It does not tell you an appliance is good. It tells you how much electricity it uses under one specific set of assumptions — and the gap between those assumptions and your life is where buyers lose money in both directions.

What is on the label

India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency requires a standardised label on air conditioners, refrigerators, ceiling fans, televisions, washing machines and several other categories.

Three things on it matter:

The star count (1 to 5). More stars means less energy for the same output. The thresholds are category-specific — a 5 star AC and a 5 star refrigerator have nothing numerically in common.

The annual energy consumption, in units (kWh). This is the number to actually use. It is the estimated yearly consumption under BEE’s standard usage assumption. For an air conditioner that assumption is 1,600 hours of operation per year.

The year of the rating cycle. The most overlooked item on the label, and the one that makes older stock misleading.

Why the year matters so much

BEE revises the thresholds periodically, making each star level harder to achieve, so the label continues to distinguish between appliances as the whole market improves.

The practical consequence: a 5 star air conditioner from an older rating cycle may be roughly equivalent to a current 4 star, or even a 3 star.

This is not a scandal — it is the system working as designed. But it means a dealer clearing old stock can honestly advertise “5 star” on a unit that is less efficient than a current 3 star one sitting beside it.

Always check the year printed on the BEE label, and compare the annual units figure rather than the stars when looking at units from different cycles.

The arithmetic that actually decides it

Here is how to work out whether a star upgrade pays for itself, using your own numbers.

Step 1. Read the annual units figure from both labels. Call these U_high and U_low.

Step 2. Work out your scaling factor. The label assumes standard usage; divide your actual expected usage by that assumption.

For an air conditioner: if you run it 8 hours a day for 5 months, that is 8 × 30 × 5 = 1,200 hours. The label assumes 1,600. Your factor is 1200 / 1600 = 0.75.

Step 3. Annual saving in units = (U_low − U_high) × your factor.

Step 4. Multiply by your electricity tariff per unit. Domestic slab rates in India commonly run somewhere between ₹6 and ₹9 per unit, and rise with consumption — check your own bill, since the marginal rate is what applies.

Step 5. Divide the price premium by the annual saving. That is your payback period in years.

The decision rule: if the payback is under about four years, take the higher rating — appliances last ten or more, so the rest is profit. If it is over six or seven years, the lower rating is the better financial choice.

Worked example

A 5 star 1.5 ton AC at ₹47,000 against a 3 star at ₹34,000. Premium: ₹13,000.

Say the labels show 820 units and 1,080 units annually. Difference: 260 units.

Heavy use — 8 hours a day, 5 months, factor 0.75: saving is 195 units a year. At ₹8 per unit, ₹1,560 a year. Payback: about 8 years. Marginal.

Very heavy use — 12 hours a day, 6 months, factor 1.35: saving is 351 units a year, or ₹2,808. Payback: about 4.6 years. Now it makes sense.

Light use — 4 hours a day, 3 months, factor 0.225: saving is 59 units, about ₹470 a year. Payback: 28 years. Clearly wrong.

Use your own figures. The point is that the same two appliances give opposite answers depending on the buyer, which is why blanket “always buy 5 star” advice is unhelpful.

Where the rating tells you nothing

Build quality and reliability. A 5 star appliance can be poorly built. The label measures energy, not longevity.

Service network. Not measured, and for a ten-year appliance it may matter more than efficiency.

Cooling or cleaning performance. Efficiency is output per unit of energy. It says nothing about whether the output is adequate for your room or your laundry.

Real-world conditions. Tests are run under controlled ambient conditions. A 5 star AC in a poorly insulated, sun-facing room will use more than its label says. So will a 3 star one.

Things that beat a star upgrade

For air conditioners specifically, these frequently save more than moving up a star rating:

  • Raising the thermostat. Roughly 6% less energy per degree. Running at 24°C instead of 20°C is a larger saving than most star upgrades.
  • Sealing the room. Gaps under doors and around windows mean you are cooling the corridor.
  • Cleaning the filter fortnightly. A clogged filter makes the unit run longer for the same cooling. Fifteen minutes, and almost nobody does it.
  • Blocking afternoon sun. Curtains on a west-facing window cut the cooling load materially.

None of these cost much. All of them compound with whatever rating you buy.

The short version

Use the annual units figure, not the star count. Check the year on the label. Do the payback arithmetic with your own usage hours and your own marginal tariff.

Heavy daily use over a long season: buy the higher rating. Light or seasonal use: buy the lower one and put the difference into sealing the room.

Is a 5 star appliance always the better buy?

No. It is better only if you use the appliance enough for the electricity savings to exceed the price premium within a reasonable period. For light or seasonal use, a 3 star unit is frequently the cheaper choice over the appliance's whole life.

Why do star ratings change every few years?

BEE periodically raises the efficiency thresholds so the label keeps tracking the state of the market. An appliance rated 5 star under an older cycle may only qualify for 4 or even 3 stars under the current one, which is why the year on the label matters.

Does the annual units figure on the label reflect my actual usage?

Almost certainly not. It assumes a standard usage pattern — for air conditioners, 1,600 hours a year. Use it as a comparison between two appliances, then scale it to your own hours to estimate real cost.
